Standard, ordinal and reduced gematria: the same word, three totals
Calculate שלום step by step with three gematria methods, check final letters and vowel points, and understand what the totals can tell you.

A gematria result needs a named method
The same Hebrew word can produce different gematria totals because different methods assign different values to its letters. Using Mazalogy’s conventions, שלום gives 376 in standard gematria, 52 in ordinal gematria and 16 in reduced-letter gematria. These are answers to three defined arithmetic questions. To compare a result with another source, keep the spelling and the method visible together.
Gematria begins with the actual letters entered. It does not translate a word into Hebrew, choose a spelling for your name or resolve an unclear manuscript. Establish the text first and calculate second. A useful record includes the full word, the value of every letter, the treatment of final forms and the final sum. That makes the work reproducible without asking a reader to trust a mysterious number.

Standard values count units, tens and hundreds
In the standard system, the first letters carry units, then the values move through tens and hundreds. Aleph is 1, Yod is 10, Kaf is 20, Qof is 100 and Tav is 400. The familiar alphabetic sequence and the numerical sequence therefore overlap at the beginning but do not remain identical throughout the alphabet.
Read שלום from right to left: Shin, Lamed, Vav, final Mem. With final Mem counted like ordinary Mem, the values are 300, 30, 6 and 40. Add them: 300 + 30 + 6 + 40 = 376. You can group the arithmetic differently without changing the result. A whole-word total should always be checkable against this simple letter-by-letter calculation.

Ordinal values use alphabet positions
Mazalogy’s ordinal method uses each letter’s position in the 22-letter alphabet. Aleph is 1 and Tav is 22; Kaf is 11 rather than 20. Final forms retain the position of their ordinary letters. This definition tells you exactly how the calculator works without implying that every text or every tool must use the same convention.
In שלום, Shin is the 21st letter, Lamed the 12th, Vav the 6th and Mem the 13th. The calculation is 21 + 12 + 6 + 13 = 52. Notice that final Mem does not become a 23rd or later position simply because a chart prints final forms after the basic alphabet. Alphabetic identities, extra printed shapes and a calculator’s counting rule are separate things.
| Letter | Standard | Ordinal | Reduced letter |
|---|---|---|---|
| ש | 300 | 21 | 3 |
| ל | 30 | 12 | 3 |
| ו | 6 | 6 | 6 |
| ם | 40 | 13 | 4 |
| Total | 376 | 52 | 16 |

Reduce each letter before adding
Reduced-letter gematria, the convention used here for mispar katan, removes the zeros from each standard letter value before summing. Shin’s 300 becomes 3, Lamed’s 30 becomes 3, Vav stays 6 and Mem’s 40 becomes 4. Thus שלום gives 3 + 3 + 6 + 4 = 16. The operation acts on the individual values, not on the digits of the finished standard total.
Mazalogy stops at 16. Reducing that finished total again would produce 1 + 6 = 7, which is an additional step. Some systems describe further reduction, so the label “reduced” alone is not sufficiently precise. When sharing a result, write “reduced letters, sum not reduced again.” A few extra words prevent a reader from comparing 16 with 7 as though the arithmetic disagreed.

Check final forms, points and spelling
Final letters are a frequent source of differing totals. Mazalogy gives ך, ם, ן, ף and ץ their ordinary-letter values. An extended-final system assigns them 500 through 900. Under that rule, שלום would have standard-style total 936 because final Mem contributes 600. That is a different declared method. It should never be silently mixed into a table using ordinary Mem’s 40.
Vowel points and punctuation do not contribute to Mazalogy’s totals. The base letters in שָׁלוֹם and שלום are the same, so both give 376 under the standard rule. Actual letters used to represent vowels still count: Vav is 6 and Yod is 10. If a spelling adds or removes one of these letters, you have changed the input rather than merely changing its visual reading aids.

Use the calculation to support a reading
An equal total can suggest a comparison, but it does not establish that two words mean the same thing. Mordechai Rubin’s Chabad essay stresses that a meaningful traditional connection requires a source. After calculating, ask where the words occur, what their ordinary meanings are, and whether a commentator actually connects them. Arithmetic is transparent; interpretation needs its own evidence.
For a personal exercise, describe your association as your own. You might connect shalom with a conversation you hope to repair, while leaving the textual claim separate. A useful notebook page records the Hebrew word, its meaning, the chosen method and one question it raises. It does not turn a total into a verdict about your personality or a score for another person.
